Lawsuit Alleges the Backpage Website Knowingly Promoted Illegal Sexual Services

In 2016, an estimated 1 out of 6 endangered runaways reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children were likely child sex trafficking victims.

Backpage began in 2004 as an online classifieds page and quickly became widely known as a site for facilitating prostitution and sex trafficking.

When their user numbers started to dwindle, and more importantly, after the site was accused of acting as a hub for human trafficking, Backpage took steps to "cover their tracks" and continued to be a harbor for prostitution and human trafficking. Why would Backpage continue on this path when they knew they were being investigated? A large number of their users were human traffickers and their victims. Their customer base would have dropped if they cracked down on the activity. They chose profits over victims of illegal posting of sexual services.

Human trafficking is modern-day slavery and involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act. Every year, millions of men, women, and children are trafficked in countries around the world, including the United States.

We are working to lead the charge in representing victims of Backpage’s posting practices and putting an end to human sex trafficking.

A recent case, filed in state district court in Harris County, TX, alleges that Backpage.com and several national hotel and truck stop companies benefited from sexual exploitation of the survivor – "Jane Doe #1" – in violation of Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code Chapter 98, an anti-trafficking law passed in 2009, and other state laws.

According to the petition, "Sex trafficking of minors has exploded in the last decade as a result of the internet marketplace of sexual assault and sexual exploitation created by the Backpage defendants… The truck stop defendants knowingly benefitted from the trafficking and sexual exploitation of Jane Doe #1 as well as the sexual exploitation of other children... Human trafficking and the sexual exploitation is a rampant and known problem in the hotel industry."

Companies that knowingly make money off the suffering and exploitation of victims, when they could have reported the crime, should be held accountable.
